NBYC Trophies

The Normandy Beach Yacht Club (NBYC) has Sunday afternoon races during the summer. Adults race in Marshall Sanderlings and Sandpipers as well as various sailboats of other sizes in a handicapped auxiliary fleet. Junior sailors race Optimist Prams, Club 420s and Lasers. Our sailors compete in Sanderlings, Sandpipers, Club 420s and Lasers during the season in pursuit of coveted Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) trophies.

 Recent and Past Accomplishments

In 2019, Peter Schwartz and Mark Connell won their respective fleets in the annual Mid Bay Champiosnhip series with LYC & SAYC while junior sailors Caroline Maher and Anna Schwartz won the 420 Fleet at the MCYC Poweder Puff Regatta. In 2017, Ceci Muller won the Mac Sayres Trophy for the top junior laser sailor at the NBYC BBYRA day followed by Caroline Maher in 2018. Additionally, outside of Barnegat Bay, former junior sailing champion Katie Boyle represents NBYC as a member of the United States Naval Academy Offshore Sailing Team....Go Katie! Go USA! In 2019, Peter Schwartz finished 3rd place in the Sandpiper fleet of BBYRA. In 2003 and 2004, Craig Hewit won the bay in the Laser Radial Class and in 2000, Beth Dorer placed second in the Laser Radial Series. In 1999, Club member and former Commodore Fred Heine won the BBYRA in the B Cat class.

The Ted LaPier Perpetual Trophy

The Ted LaPier Perpetual Trophy was established in 1994 to honor the memory of R. Theodore LaPier a past Commodore (1982-1983) of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) and a long standing member of the Normandy Beach Yacht Club.

As a youngster, Ted was very active in sailing on Barnegat Bay and represented the Normandy Beach Yacht Club in many local and regional sailing regattas. Ted also served as Vice Commodore of the Normandy Beach Yacht Club for many years, designing the sailing courses still used today in the club’s Sunday Races.

This trophy, which is a replica of Ted's Sanderling - The Elusive Eleven - is awarded each year to the winner of the Sanderling Class when the BBYRA is sailed at Normandy Beach. A small plaque on the trophy states very succinctly the club’s respect for Ted. It reads: “Ted LaPier was a sailor whose substantial contributions to the NBYC & BBYRA are memorialized in this perpetual trophy.”

Over the past 20+ years, this trophy has been won by many of the premier Sanderling skippers on Barnegat Bay.

The Commodore's Cup

The Commodore's Cup is awarded annually to the winner of the Normandy Beach Yacht Club's Sanderling Regatta, which is held on the BBYRA off Saturday between the first and second halves of the BBYRA racing season.

The NBYC Sanderling Regatta was the brainchild of Fred Collani, Commodore of the club in 1978 and an avid Sanderling sailor and competitor in the BBYRA.

Initially, the race was only for NBYC Sanderling skippers, but very quickly was opened to all Sanderling sailors on the Bay. Over the past 30+ years, some of the top Bay Sanderling skippers have been winners of the Commodore's Cup.

The Bronander Trophy

The Bronander Trophy was created in 1958 by Past Commodore William Bronander, when he was Vice Commodore of the club. As Vice Commodore, Bill was very involved with the Junior Sailing Program and felt that there should be an award for that sailor, who exhibited outstanding sportsmanship. In those early days the junior sailors raced every Wednesday and Sunday morning in Penguins.

In 1973 the club Directors felt that the criteria for awarding the Bronander Trophy should be changed to honor that club member, who gave outstanding service over and above that which would be expected, to the club. Thus, beginning in 1973 and succeeding years, the trophy has been awarded to a club member for outstanding service to the Normandy Beach Yacht Club.

The Ginny Thrower Memorial Trophy

The Ginny Thrower Memorial Trophy was created in June of 2008 in remembrance of Virginia (Ginny) Thrower, a long time supporter of sailing in the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association and the Normandy Beach Yacht Club sailing programs.

Ginny Thrower together with her husband Troy joined the Normandy Beach Yacht Club in 1965. In the intervening years Ginny contributed in many ways to the club. She sailed annually in the club’s Sunday Series, which was initially sailed in Sunfish. For many years Ginny was the Treasurer of the Normandy Beach Yacht Club and in later years served as the official scorer for the club’s Auxiliary fleet.

The trophy will be awarded annually to that individual who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and concern for his fellow sailors in the club’s annual Sunday series.

The Phillips Trophy

The Phillips’s Trophy was the gift of Chauncey and Chara Phillips and was awarded to the winner of the Lightning Class when the BBYRA was sailed at NBYC.

The trophy was first awarded in 1957 and was continued until 1999, when it went into semi retirement, because Lightnings no longer compete at NBYC on BBYRA Day.

Many of the most outstanding Bay Lightning sailors have been winners of the Phillips Trophy.
